Encroaching Emeralds setting causes crash upon creating new world

Whenever I try to create a new world, this setting seems to cause a crash.
To reproduce this:
- Enable Encroaching Emeralds setting
- Save settings and exit Minecraft and restart instance
- Try to create a new world
