I use optifine but the mod worked correctly before. Latest version of 1.12.2. No resource pack.

I am unable to reproduce with just Fairy Lights and OptiFine, what other mods do you have installed?

I'm having this exact same issue. the lights place when on blocks, but any fence type blocks (modded, vanilla, iron bars, etc) it renders as invisible.

~~Nevermind, this appears to be FoamFix's doing.~~

Actually this is tied to Forge version, the recommended release works. I will work on a fix.
