Currently it seems that controls have to be manually added for them to work while in a plane e.g. the "/" key had to be added so that commands could be entered using it.

Wouldn't it be better to handle controls in a different way so that all Minecraft commands are available while in a plane? I'm not sure of a good reason to block other controls while in a plane.
