Originally, butterflies were not intended to be breedable into new species. However, Nedelosk added the Bombyx Mori moth in 1.12 which requires a mutation between the common brimstone and the latticed heath moth. Other butterfly mods might want breeding like this as well, so the escritoire should be able to provide research notes so that mutations may be shown in the analyzer.
