I only have a single unlocked compacting drawer placed (used to determine if I want a compacting drawer for an item or not). I try to always lock every other drawer immediately as I place them, unlocking only to fix a mistake.

It would be nice to save a step and have the drawers locked in my inventory before I place them. Perhaps I could place a drawer and configuration tool in my hand crafting and get a locked drawer and the crafting tool stays in the left side?
