Use the Salt Upgrade Template on any armor, wear it, and then /kill; it will not stay with you, nor will it appear with your other dropped items. Same goes for any preserved item you put in your offhand. These same items work fine preservation-wise if they're in your normal inventory/hotbar slots, just not during active use.
