Yoyos stay out when you switch to another inventory slot while right clicking. They will also keep staying out when you release right click on another hotbar slot, and you can use other items (e.g a sword) while the yoyo stays out. The yoyo only retracts when you switch back to the hotbar slot of the yoyo and right click again.

This also makes the yoyo not take durability damage.
