Struggling to create a resource pack compatibility layer for this mod. Any and all help welcome!

Hello,
I like to use this mod together with the 'whimscape' resource pack. I wanted to try my hand at making the guards from this mod look more like the ones from the RP im using, rather than the default villager face they have by default.
What I tried:
I have already made my own custom, revised guard textures and can confirm that they are the right dimensions, names and filetypes. They are also in the correct placement, being under RP/assets/guardvillagers/textures/entity/guard. (I don't use the steve models so they were not given revised textures or included in the RP at all.)
The Issue:
Upon loading up a world with the RP enabled (regardless of priority in list of RP's) it seemingly does not take those custom textures... I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or not but any help is very much appreciated. I am pretty new to this whole 'texturing' thing so Im sure the solution is probably looking me in the face right now or something, lmao!
