Tested on 1.8.9. With Efficiency, hammers mine stone and ores very quickly, but the enchantment does not seem to work on hardened/stained clay. The 3x3 break still occurs, just no speed boost.

Hmm, I'll have a look at this, just making them extend ItemPickaxe might do it.
