One of the comments on this video suggested this, and it's not a bad idea.

• Add config option for mob protection radius
  Default setting should be fairly small but a bit further than the light would naturally cover
• Add boolean config option to only protect around Soul Campfires
• Prevent mobs from spawning within the configured radius around Campfires
