Nothing can grow in a red sand desert/mesa.

Wild grain bread is significantly worse than any other kind of bread, but can be made with various foraged plants, including poppies.
Potatoes, carrots and beets can all grow in places such as taigas, so I do not think it would be necessary to create many crops for those kinds of climates.
