Hammers only gain XP for centre block

Hammers only gain XP for the block mined directly, not the surrounding 8 that get mined along with it.
To replicate, take a hammer and mine any area of stone.
You will get 9 cobble (9 stone blocks broken) but the hammer will gain only 1 XP.
Not sure if intentional, but given the high XP requirements of leveling a hammer, I suspect not.
