We need to re-vamp how to get into IR in survival. Eventually this might be with an add on mod, but for now we need a stopgap.

I propose making smaller and cheaper versions of machines that are either slower or can only make parts up to a certain size / complexity.

We will need help from modelers once a general design is fleshed out.

In regards to the types of machines needed, a locomotive is just another example of a metal machine, and involves largely the same metal fabrication processes as any other type of machine that uses the same types of components.

Also I'd like to keep it similar to the existing process for now and not add any drastically new crafting types as part of this work. Better machines / interactions are on the table though.
