It would be nice if there were slots added to locomotives that would allow the player to leave a coupling hook, wrench and whistle in each locomotive so that the player wouldn't have to carry them around or leave them somewhere else when they are not running the trains.

It's an interesting idea, but not worth the time to implement and maintain.
