The title pretty much encompasses the issue. I have noticed a few things with this:

1. Experience orbs are consumed and fed to the backpack, whether the internal tank for essence is full or not.
2. Not collecting experience orbs results in the mending enchantment not working if used in conjunction with the backpack. The tank being full and still consuming orbs makes this particularly problematic, as even filling the pack and throwing bottles of enchanting down to try repair your tool does not work; you have to manually disable auto-collect or remove the backpack from your inventory to repair a tool.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a means to toggle experience auto-collection and item auto-collection separately (as a small added feature request!). I personally prefer to collect experience myself, although I can see why others would appreciate and use this feature. Perhaps changing auto-collection to either 2 separate toggles or having it cycle modes instead of being a boolean switch (items only, experience only, items and experience, off) would be good, in my opinion.
