Is this the case in OptiFine, and if so what differences arise?

It might have been the case in some OptiFine versions, not sure if it's still an issue. It's required for things like POM to work on entities and block entities. Since the vertex attributes have undefined values, it causes weird issues like the bed phasing in and out of reality in this screenshot: #1050 (comment)

This should be mostly fixed in the experimental PBR branch.
