When a kobold is given an amethyst shard, heart particles don't appear around them, and kobolds will not immediately breed even if two of them close to each other are given amethyst shards. I initially thought breeding was broken, but when I came back sometime later, there were indeed baby kobolds wandering about. Additionally, kobold warriors don't seem to accept amethyst at all.
