Did the issue happen in singleplayer or on a server?

I did some testing and the machines only show as Nothing if the I/O-configuration is not properly set.
As soon as I configure the machine, it will properly show up in the ME Pattern Access Terminal.
I want to keep this behavior since it's a good indicator that the machine is not configured yet.

Do you mean the title of the machine which is displayed in the Pattern Terminal when a Pattern Provider is attached to it?
Did you configure the I/O-configuration of the machine?
