In 1.18 mobs only spawn in complete darkness now. But the mod shows yellow x's over blocks that aren't completely dark.

I came here for this exact reason until i thought to check the config, just change the line "crossLevel=7" to "crossLevel=0" and "secondaryLevel=(whatever this is, mine is already -1)" to "secondaryLevel=-1" or use the mod menu if your pack has it,
