changing anything in the distribution pipe GUI causes the client to crash only on server

Placing a Distribution Transport pipe in Creative of Survival mode, then interacting with the GUI is fine, but when you try to change anything in the GUI, the client crashes with an error: "An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine" or "A fatal error has occured, this connection has been terminated".
The server produces the following error:
[18:35:07 ERROR]: There was a critical exception handling a packet on channel additionalpipes

[18:35:07 INFO]: Jguy1987 lost connection: A fatal error has occured, this connection is terminated
This only happens on multiplayer, singleplayer does not suffer from this crash.
Sorry, but there is no distribution pipe in Logistics Pipes. Please open an issue at Buildcraft Additional Pipes.
