Right now there's no way to disconnect part of the steam system, which means no way of building pressure for machines that can't otherwise be disabled. If we had a pipe with valve that we could right-click or use redstone on, then we'd be able to turn off machines when they're not in use, or build up pressure in a tank for use later.
