The Energy upgrades don't have any effect on the energy cost of this machine at all.

Intentional. It prevents a power generation exploit from burning Hydrogen. Energy Upgrades only increase the internal power buffer in that machine.

I see. Energy upgrade is listed in the machine as viable so i just thought it was a bug. I would have thought that disabling it's use in the machine would be less confusing.

I agree that exceptions like this are confusing. This 'issue' is brought up fairly often.

Personally, I would move the energy capacitance increase to either the Speed Upgrade (where it is somewhat necessary) or split Energy Upgrades into two different upgrades. I could see Capacitor and (Energy) Efficiency upgrades, and I expect the relevant effect is fairly self evident.

From there, it's a simple matter of not letting the Electrolytic Separator accept the Energy Efficiency upgrade and get rid of this one outlier.

I can understand avoiding powergen exploits, but it's not as if you don't get completely free power from wind and solar, yet those are not considered exploits. Not an argument to make hydrogen power less realistic, of course, just an observation that getting power from "nothing" is not exactly unheard of.
