
Farmer doesn't work in underwater colony

Is there an existing issue for this?
- I have searched the existing issues.
Are you using the latest MineColonies Version?
- I am running the latest beta/release version of MineColonies for my Minecraft version.
I am also running the latest versions of other mods that are part of my problem.
Did you check on the Wiki? or ask on Discord?
- I checked the MineColonies Wiki and made sure my issue is not covered there. Or I was sent from discord to open an issue here.
What were you playing at the time? Were you able to reproduce it in both settings?

Current Behavior
Farmers just stands around waiting for "something" or the courier. They do not work, plant or till, even if they have all necessary resources.
There was another ticket/issue written, but it doesn't seem to have been fixed as of right now. This is in an underwater base. The farmer stands and the voiceline for requesting items keeps repeating, but when interacting with the farmer, they do not request anything
Expected Behavior
I of course expect the farmer to till and plant seeds/vegetables when given those instructions
Reproduction Steps
- Make a colony
- Make a Farm
- Hire a farmer
- Give them an eternal hoe (i've tried gold, stone and iron in lvl 2)
- Tell the to plant Garlic (the thing i'm currently trying to grow)
- Watch

There is a bug, which is being fixed, but if you wait 2 in game days (I think it was 2!) they should start working again

Sorry, probably misunderstood, them not working is not the bug? Just the complain is? Cos there's a LOT of people saying they don't work once they start that complaining thing

I keep telling people to wait more days to see what happens, cos I did wonder that, it's just there's been so many!
Previously they would just redo the same step over and over again so people thought they were working even though ti was a lot less productively. So now they see less of that. We might add some wandering around so give people a sensation they're doing sth =D

Hey, guy playing on same server and also playing MineColonies + having the same issue as OP here. I sincerely hope this is a bug because the state of the farmers on our server are sadly uselessness. A tier 4 farmer with 4 fields of mine will litteraly leave some crops untouched for weeks, checked my weekly summary (He has had over 2.5 weeks to work), and 2 / 4 crops he had harvested 0 of, and of the 2 he had, he had harvested half a field of the one, and about 26 (maybe 10% of a field?) of the other, meaning of all fields which could be harvested at least once (each) in that given week, he managed to harvest like 15%. If this is "just a complaint", it sure has hell is one that is neccesary, because I am contemplating making some mod to allow me to grow MineColonies crops myself without the farmer, as they simply just stand around and gawk 95% of the time. From my perspective, if the farmers are currently working as intended, then you might as well remove them entirely, because you essentially need a farmer for every 3 workers with the efficiency they currently provide. They should just continually check for stuff to do instead of once a day, so if they see that a field is fully planted, and ready to be 80% harvested, instead of waiting for tomorrow to do it at 11:00, they should just go and do it. The reason I find this so important is because MineColonies force you to use their crops, which can only be gotten through the farmers in the mod, and sadly my citizens won't accept anything below the max quality (meaning my primary food production is forcibly tied to the the efficiency of my farmers, who are doing barely anything)
Like I said, if they don't touch the field at all, something is wrong. Are you sure the field area is loaded when you are around?
They should fully harvest at least every 3 ingame days (unless you're unlucky because they miss a day because of disease/raid/rain/etc) but still at most every 4 ingame days.
If that is not the case, something is broken. Either the farm/field area is not chunk loaded for the majority of your play time. Or something else is amiss.
If they are unable to plant a field because of missing seeds to plant today, they won't be planting again until 2 days later.
Explanation : the field will still go into the next stage (PLANTED
). The next day, the farmer can't harvest because there is no harvestable surface, the field transitions into EMPTY
stage. Next day, the farmer tries to hoe the field, transitioning the field into HOED
. Now on third day after the first planting attempt the farmer will try to plant again.
Is that intended behavior or a bug?
That is okay, but should be very rare. For once, it should only affect the farmer on the first time trying to plant something. (Field is empty). After the field is full, the best way to take care of the field and get some crops to plant is actually to go into the harvest stage next.
Edit: It would not explain farmers not harvesting a field for a week.
To really exemplify how useless the farmers are in our world currently are, I did some math using the "statistic" from the farmer block. In a week, with 4 * 11x11 - 1 size fields, I got a little under 250 peas, i just assume 250 for benefit of the doubt, and 26 garlic. Running that through a bunch of python code gets me this:

Now, I realize comparing to theoretical maximum is somewhat ridiculous, as it would assume every crop is harvested and replanted instantly upon being fully grown, but even assuming 10% of theoretical maximum, which i consider pretty low already, the efficiencies are still very very very bad:

And on top of that these numbers are actually positively skewed (yes, that means they look better than they should), because my calculations assume plants ONLY grow during work hours (WITH 25% added inefficiency), but that isn't true, crops can grow any time there is light, which at the farms mean all the time due to there being lighting all over. So in conclusion, the farmer is currently very close to unusable, and the only reason I (and my friend) even use them is because we are forced to, if we don't want our workers going on strike :P. I hope this cleared some things up.

So every three days, they should harvest 120 crops, yielding 300 crops per three days (on an 11x11 field, where each field is hydrated, and one block is missing to hydrate the center blocks), or 100 per day
That should be enough to sustain the colony (and I’ve seen messages on discord where someone is flooded with garlic, as farmers can produce more than the cookery needs to keep up with the food)

I didn't know that the farmers only harvested fields once per day, and just assumed crop yield given farmers working at any oppertunity. Well in that case there should be a config option to enable continous work, because I simply don't understand how my colony should ever get enough food. As we speak, about 15 colonists are sitting at my restaurant with Slowness I and no saturation. This is the fourth time they do this, and when they do they just refuse to work. This is because my cooks quite simply almost never has any ingredients to cook food with. I haven't found a way to fix this besides cheats (Cheating in a couple of stack of MineColonies food items to get them working again, as they will simply sit at the restaurant (the cook too :D) forever). As you could see in my prior example, it is entirely possible for the farmer to go a whole week only harvesting about 0.6 fields (where they should harvest a little over 8 times per your logic, each field harvested once per 3 days, 2 times a week, 4 fields a farm). This can't be real, and as long as this issue stands I just don't see how it is possible to make a high-level colony, as mine already now (not even L-5 housing yet) ask for high-quality meals as well as wanting to have at least 3 MineColonies foods in stock at all times, and currently I am barely able to actually get one, meaning without intervention (cheating) from me, the colony is not and never will be self-sufficient.

You are confusing two problems. If the farmer actually produced the 100 a day, your colony would actually have enough food. Your problem is that following your statistic this is not happening.
The problem does not seem to be the once a day logic, but something else entirely.

Thanks for the info, I'll unload them now! However I don't think this is the problem as my friend (OP) does not have them loaded this way, and he still has the problem, it is actually even worse for him. In about 50 days his farmer hasn't even planted more than like 2 or 3 full fields.
As you got 250 peas, much less garlic and nothing of the others, the 250 is more or less what you should be getting from all. Which would be quite enough to feed a colony.

250 peas is sadly still only about 1/3 of the expected output, as you get 3-5 peas per harvest and replant costs 1 per plant. average of 3+4+5 = 4, and then - 1 from replant and you get 3 per harvest. 120 * 3 = 360, so a full harvest would be 360. That would mean weelky we should have about 2 harvests, each yielding about 360, actually a little more because of University upgrades. That is 720 / week, plus whatever bonus you have from university in my case 10% -> 720*1,1 = 792, a little over 3 times what I got, and then you have the three other crops where we should get about 240 per harvest = 528 (with 10% bonus) / week, where I got 0, 0 and 26, so practically nothing.
So it is definetely not because the default behavior is not good enough, it is because the farmers aren't currently able to follow the default behavior.

Yes well I supposed that then makes it crystal clear that the farmers aren't working as intended, if you say 10 levels of farm blocks (10 fields being worked) is intended to be able to feed 200 people, then my 8 fields (2 L-4 farms) should be able to feed around 160. I have 26 and am as mentioned struggling to feed those, even when I:
- Am importing raw mutton and beef from my AE2 system (Basically, warehouse has infinite of these)
- Am ocassionally cheating in stacks of food when my workers refuse to work and sit at the restaurant all day
- Also have a L-5 Cowhand's Hut producing milk which I am also using as cooking ingredient for extra food
- Have research giving me 10% extra crop yield
Given the extra conditions listed above my farms should be able to feed well over 200 citizens, and can feed maybe 15-17 (estimate given lack of supply). This would give os a ratio between reality/expectation of maybe 16/220 = 0.073 = 7.3%. This also fits with my previous statement that I am getting about 1/12 of the crops I should (1/3 expected peas, practically none of the other 3)

I still don't see how this lines up with the prior description of their work. Assuming 1 action / day / field, where we have 3 separate actions, we would harvest any given field about every three days. This would result in 2.33...4 harvests per week per field. With each crop yielding 2-3 crops, and a replant costing 1 per crop, that yields about 2.5 average yield - 1 = 1.5 after adjusting for replant, gives you net 180 crops per harvest, so 11.667 (approximate number of harvests per week) * 180 = 2100 (plus yield bonus from research) / week in net yield for a lvl 5 farmer with 5 fields. With each food recipe costing 4-5 ingedients each this might make 500 meals / week from that one tier 5 farmer. Assuming 2 meals a day, 7 days a week, we get 35 fed people. Well.. I feel silly now, because I guess then it is actually close to your estimate, as that would mean you need about 5.5 farmers for 200 people. I feel a little wiser now.
