Hopseed saplings generate dirt

Not sure if this is intended behavior.
Hopseeds have 2x2 trunks but grow from one sapling. If you put a sapling on a single dirt block with air surrounding it, then bonemeal it, you get 3 extra dirt for free! Under each of the basal trunk logs, you get a bit of dirt.
What version are you using, as I can't get them to grow at all #120.
Edit: saw your comment there, now I am really confused as to the growing requirements.
