Redwood saplings popping out of the ground?

I am trying to grow the giant redwood tree, I would like to know what other recquirements it has besides planting it in 7x7. I have tried everything from layers of dirt below it to clearing the area around it, to trying to get it to grow on a superflat. When it tries to grow (bonemeal or vanilla) it removes roughly half of the saplings which vanish into thin air. The only times I got one to actually grow was when I had an area of more then 10x10 covered in saplings. Hence the questions, other then 7x7 what are the necessary steps to make sure 1 can grow?
