Reported:

• Some, or modded, axes don't work
• Dynamic recipe replacement not functioning for some mods, or for some wood types
• Endless confusion about users not understanding separate shaped recipes for crafting planks vs. sticks

This issue is frustrating to solve, due to the difficulties with dynamic recipe replacement, and detection of other mods' axes, woods, and associated planks. As a feature, it doesn't add much, and making it function widely probably doesn't merit the effort it would take - neither the previous "datapack compatibility for arbitrary woods" or the current dynamic replacement don't function reliably.

I too can see that a workaround for it can be REALLY difficult to make. For the sake of consistency and compatibility, this is much needed, but you'd have to make something that detects wood types and makes recipes out of them, but that would be impossible without it needing addons
