First, they could really use a way to have variable strength or be turned off entirely. Unless I messed up my testing, a direct redstone signal does nothing. Perhaps signal strength = influence length?

Second, they effect players who are in creative mode or even an OP. This should probably be a config option. Using just fans you can make areas difficult or impossible for even admins of servers to access, requiring a teleport or flying to the top of the world and going all the way back down if the fans were stacked from bedrock to sky limit.

Third and lastly, they probably could use a recipe change, even if the other changes are not made. Right now they only cost half a piece of stone and 1 and 1/16th of an iron ingot, making them very easy to spam once you have even stone level tools. Some redstone components and a button feel appropriate.

Suggestion... can you change the facing direction when placed with perhaps a shift-click, or perhaps a method to change the direction once placed?
