Chisel & Bits elevator issue

I'm trying to create something that looks like the inside of an elevator and I'm running into problems when I use Chisel & Bits.
I start with working elevators and then in the block space above the elevators I place small strips with Chisel & Bits to look like hand rails. Now what's interesting is that if there is only a single strip a long one edge then everything works fine but if I have two strips joined up in a corner then you can use the elevator from that corner to go to another one but you can't get back to that elevator space.
I can take some screenshots if that would help but maybe this is just a known constraint due to the elevator thinking there isn't enough space ? Now that I think about it I'm actually curious how it works with just a single strip since that should make the area no longer an air block. Anyway just wanted to see if this is a known constraint or not.
Thanks
The more I thought about it the more I suspect that C&B likely is just saying that the block is not an air block once there is a threshold met for number of bits.. I've asked a question on their github to see if that's the case and if I can tell it that the C&B block should be treated like an Air block even if it passes that #.
