Being able to place blocks without a block placer immediately next to it is actually something modded Minecraft doesn't have very many ways to do. It would be quite useful for the tree farm I'm trying to design.

I recommend an upgraded version of the existing item cannon. It would attempt to place a block at the destination point. If it can't, the block would either return to the cannon or sit on the ground.
