When I put the Optifine installer into the mods folder, my game just does not load. I'm stuck on the Mojang screen with 90% loaded, then nothing. It just stays there.

I removed all my texture packs, which allowed the game to load, but now all text is just squares

Glad you got it solved, Im trying to debug on my side whats causing the issue with the loading, only thing I can diagnose is when Optifine / Optifabric tries to load custom colors sometimes it crashes. Same with CIT

Post your mod list. Also try removing all your texture packs before launch, then adding back afterwards.
