Painting Item Disappears When Exiting Selection Menu

Description:
When using the Paintings ++ mod, if a player places a painting to open the painting selection menu and then presses the escape key to exit the menu without selecting a painting, the painting item is removed from the player's inventory instead of returning it.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Load Minecraft with the specified versions and mods.
  2. Obtain the painting item from your inventory.
  3. Place the painting and wait for the selection menu to appear.
  4. Press the escape key to exit the selection menu without selecting any painting.

Expected Result:
The player should retain the painting item in their inventory after exiting the menu.

Actual Result:
The painting item is removed from the player's inventory and no painting is placed or dropped to replace it.

Additional Information:
This bug results in unintended loss of items for players, as they may not realize that the item would be removed when they simply want to exit the selection interface.
