Killed by brain slime 4 blocks away not on my head

A brain slime targeted me while it was in the water, right onshore. I saw briefly it's jump animation but it remained in the water. Shortly after I started taking brain slime damage until my character's expiration despite attempts to attack upwards incase it was only visual.
Was running latest version 1.2.2a
Did some more tests, it seems to happen very rarely, I got it to happen again. It seems to be you have super rare chance of the slime dismounting you but still be considered on you.
