By putting hives and boxes too next to each other, it's possible to lock a disconnected hive in 'expanded' state.

Steps:

• place an advanced hive
• place an expansion box on top of it (they connect)
• place another advanced hive on top of the expansion box (texture updates showing the expansion box as disconnected)
• break the expansion box
• check the bottom hive - UI still shows as if there was expansion box connected to it.

From what I checked it works sideways too. Seems less likely to happen if built from top down but does happen sometimes.
