Lamps are effectively unusable within contraptions on servers due to lighting updates, it would be awesome if there was a non-light version of the lamp - still has the texture change to something a lot lighter and still extends, just doesn't emit any light.

Don't think this makes sense. The entire purpose of lamps is to emit light. No reason to use them otherwise.
