Igniter cannot be activated by redstone

Issue Description
Trying to power an igniter by most redstone signals doesn't work.
What Happens
I am attempting to ignite a relatively large refractory pit. I used to have a single igniter near the entrance to the pit, and I'd just press the button on an igniter to ignite the refractory pit; this worked fine. However, after increasing the size of the pit a bit (from 3x4, 2 high, to 4x4, 3 high), I noticed that a single igniter no longer ignites the whole pit. I figured I'd try putting two igniters, one on each side of the pit, to start the burning process. However, the igniters do not appear to respond to a redstone signal at all without the button.

I also attempted to use the igniters to automate the creation of grains of infinity (EnderIO), and got the same result.
Levers work, though.
What You Expect to Happen
I expected the igniter to start a fire anytime it receives a redstone signal. It works when you press a button that is placed on the igniter, but not when it receives a signal using any other method that I've noticed.
