My game crashed repeatedly while exploring some ocean. It looked in the logs like generating pirate ships caused the crash, so I toggled them off in the settings. Doing so stopped it from crashing, but it still continued generating new pirate ships in previously unexplored chunks. (But the pirate ships were no longer populated by skeletons and there was no loot.)
