At some point after version 146, the behaviour of shift-clicking items into the crafting grid changed. It used to be that you can only shift-click items from the main inventory and trying to shift-click from the hotbar would transfer them into the main inventory. Now it is the opposite of that: you can only shift-click into the crafting grid from the hotbar, shift-clicking from the main inventory transfers the item to the hotbar.
The new behaviour doesn't seem to be intended (judging by the release notes) and, IMO, makes less sense.
