Quark chests (sometimes) behave like vanilla double chests when they shouldn't

If you place two Quark chests of a different wood type side-by-side, they render as a pair of separate single chests. However, it appears that they're sometimes being treated as a vanilla double chest for the purposes of auto-insertion.
To reproduce, place a pair of chests (of different material, say spruce and dark oak) side-by-side, and place a hopper on top of one of them. Depending on the positioning of the chests and the hopper, the hopper may insert items into the wrong chest.
Tested with Quark 1.0.55.
I've had issues with quark chests for a while with I think all versions that I have played , and I'm going to add a rather long post with pictures, about problems with sorting related to this issue. (I earlier opened #203 without fully understand how things went wrong).
I'm currently running Quark 1.1-68 and a bunch of other mods, but none that do anything to chests.
I place three chests, two dark oak and one spruce, like this:
Then I put one charcoal in the right chest like this, the two others are empty:
I go over here and use the merge button:
And every charcoal end up in the right chest as expected:
Then I do the same over again, but I'm going over here before I click sort:
The right chest ends up like this:
The next thing I tried was to place the first charcoal in the bottom half of the right chest instead of the upper half. Then I ended up like this, with the first picture being the right chest and the third picture being the left one:
If I put one in the upper half and one in the lower half, I get the same result as the last three pictures, nothing gets placed in the upper half at all.
If I place the initial item in the middle chest, it only "leaks" to the left chest, If I'm standing left of it(behind it). Nothing gets placed in the right chest no matter where I stand.
So the "leaking" is always to chests behind the chest where I expect the items to be placed.
And it never happens if I stand on the front side of the chests.
I have had at least four or five chests side by side with "leaking" between them all.
This was a long post, I hope this made sense!
I really love the different chests and the sorting buttons, and I hope it's a way to fix this :)

I had thought it was an EnderIO issue that the separate chests were being treated as a double chest, but it happens with vanilla hoppers too.
Hope this gets fixed. It would be useful to be able to have side by side chests by using different wood.
