When exploring caves I've noticed that any Forgotten mobs that spawn naturally (i.e without player intervention) do not have any equipment so can't really do anything to you. This does not happen when they spawn from a spawn egg or a player-created monster spawner, in those cases they spawn with a sword, bow and hat like they are supposed to.
