Simply put, I tried to make a chest using wood from a tree generated by the BoP mod and failed to do so. As Quark adds coloured chests I figured it was this that was at fault, as I could make barrels and other items with the wood without issue.

To confirm it was most probably Quark, I made a new world without the Quark mod present and was able to make vanilla chests no problem.

Of course, I don't expect Quark to come with BoP support out of the box, but allowing modded wood to make vanilla chests would be a suitable alternative until support by Quark or another Quark <---> Biomes O Plenty compatibility mod is updated/created.
