Hoe Area Mining / Transparent Blocks

My issue is essentially that I cannot 5x5 mine with the hoe if I am right-clicking on the waterlogged slab at the center of my farm. I need a slab or block ABOVE the farm.

It would be nice if you could use the 3x3 or 5x5 mining on a transparent block parallel to the crops you are mining. Or even just if I were to be able to do it in the bottom of the water source block that is in the center of the crops.

Currently my workaround is that I have a slab ABOVE the water source in the middle of my crop field, but if I were to waterlog it and place it on the same Y level as the crops, the ability does not trigger. Currently tested in Vault Hunters.
