Crashed while toggling rotation lock climbing ladder

I was climbing a ladder in the nether holding a block while looking down toggling my rotation lock. I first pressed the key while facing forward on the ladder, which enabled it, then looked down and pressed the key again and crashed with a null pointer exception.
