At first I thought that the grid was just a bit buggy where it didn't always take what I was trying to drop in. Then I took a minute to test it. I saw that if the mouse is on the lines between items in the grid, where no inventory slot is highlighted, clicking to drop an item doesn't work. Nothing happens and the items remain attached to your cursor.
