I think it would be cool if Time Lords were able to trigger fake regenerations, which don't heal you or destroy stuff, just trigger the visual effect. The Doctor does this in that episode with the monks. Not only would it make the mod a little more consistent with the lore, it would also allow you to test your regeneration's visual settings without having to use up one of your regenerations.
