Hostile mobs will start to target you after another mob who is hostile towards the mob you're currently playing as/possessing attacks you, like for example you're playing as a villager and a zombie attacks you and theres a skeleton nearby, that skeleton will start to shoot at you.

Ah, yeah that would be an unintended consequence of the detection code.
