Is there an existing issue for this?

  • I have searched the existing issues

Observed behaviour

While moving about in the sunlight, a lich's helmet is damaged and eventually destroyed.. resulting in the lich then burning in sunlight.

Expected behaviour

This is especially a issue since many class abilities (battlemage/sage/warlock) depend on wearing a full set of matching armor.

In addition, this comes as a shock to players who are used to wizard headgear being reduced to 0 mana but not destroyed.

Lastly, this does not match the behavior of undead who are wearing headgear (these undead are immune to being set on fire by sunlight).

With all of these considerations, I would suggest not having headgear damaged/destroyed when worn during sunlight by a lich. This would in effect, make the lich immune to burning during sunlight.. as long as the helmet isnt destroyed by mob attacks (which non-wizard headgear might be).

Steps to reproduce

  1. Join a Server
  2. Become a lich and equip a full set of Battlemage armor, Spell Blade, and Runic Shield
  3. Move about in sunlight and notice the helmet be destroyed after a time.
  4. Notice the inability to use the Spell Blade and Runic Shield as a result.

2024/5/22 - Dans Response in regards to lich options to deal with sunlight damage:

  1. Headgear, which takes damage overtime until destroyed
    • Wizard gear should not be destroyed, thus is a bug
  2. Necrocloak charm artefact (phylactery in receptacle pyramid), protects player and headgear from sunlight
  3. Healing Receptacle 4, protects player and headgear from sunlight
  4. Fire Receptacle 4, protects player from sunlight (headgear still damaged)

This issue is potentially a duplicate of one of the following issues:

  • [#31] [Bug] Lich's soul phylactery should be able to be in hotbar to avoid Curse of Enfeeblement (57.74% match)

Dan's response: "Liches are undead and should burn by sunlight. Like with other undeads, a headgear should prevent it, and take durability damage if it has a durability bar. If the item is unbreakable, it shouldn't take damage. If the item shouldnt break when it reaches 0 durability (e.g. wizard gear), it shouldn't break, but also shouldn't prevent sun damage."

The main concern is with wizard gear, since some important wizard abilities (casting spells via Fate mod, battlemage item use, sage item use) depends on wearing a full set of matching wizard gear.

Can we set Wizard headgear to to be immune to sunlight burn damage (not losing mana/durability), while likewise not protecting the lich from burning in sunlight?

Can we set a configurable option for whether a lich's headgear loses/does not lose durability in sunlight, so modpack makers can choose which works for their desired gameplay better?

Arguments for not having lich's headgear be damaged:

  • While a lich's ability to fly/hover and breath underwater is cool.. at the level that they are gained.. players often have other ways to do the same effects (wind charm/fly spells/elytra.. or respiration enchantment/aquatic spells/aquatic armor) while not having any drawbacks. I'm worried that being a lich may not be enough of a draw for players, if I make burning in sunlight automatic for my modpack. Perhaps there are lich abilities I am not aware of, that cannot be replicated easily by experienced characters?
  • It's easy to turn the night into day by sleeping on a bed, where it is tougher to turn it into night (high level spell or the use of a hammock which needs more setup time).
  • Isn't it true that headgear worn by undead mobs takes no damage (even if it has durability) when in sunlight? I've seen zombies walking around with leather caps in sunlight with no apparent effect, even though leather caps shouldn't last very long.

Arguments for having lich's headgear be damaged (outside of wizard gear):

  • Thematically, being a undead should have disadvantages to balance some of it's advantages. Burning in sunlight is a obvious one. Losing headgear would be a expensive, but very noticeable drawback. It would force lich characters using headgear outside of wizard gear to be very thoughtful of adventuring outdoors for long periods.
