Scala for Java 8?

I realize this is addressed in the Readme, but I can not find any reference to 2.12 not being the latest major release for Scala.

Minecraft is Java 8 only, What is the issue of using 2.12?

Compatibility with forges current libs after the next update ill update to 2.12
