ServerCore:1.2.9
Minecraft:1.18.2

I can't add it to my public curseforge modpack that way right?

For versions of 1.18, that would be correct. 1.19 is about to release though - and pretty much all of the current in-development updates are built on 1.19.

I would prefer not having to constantly backport versions unless really necessary.

Well, frick. Guess i gotta skip snow real magic this time around considering it'll be a while for other mods to update.
