I know this is likely a major challenge, so I fully understand if the answer is "not yet" or "not ever".

One feature I used a lot in Storage Drawers was the compactor drawer: they were hard to build, requiring pistons and some other items, but once placed they would store items that had a 'compacted' form: coal->coal blocks, wheat->hay bales, iron nugget->iron ingot->iron block, and so on. Whatever form of the item you put in, the drawer would store a calculated total value and then allow you to withdraw the item in any of its possible forms/states.

A 4x4 drawer will do roughly the same job, minus a little effort for conversion up and down, so I would consider this more of a major enhancement than a priority.
