Sprinkler does not work as well as real rain / hydration, causing farmland to randomly decay

What happened?

I'm trying to see if sprinklers can help me grow crops in a more space efficient way than having to use water sources that take up farmland space and break the rows. The problem I'm noticing is that sprinklers will randomly cause one or two farmland in its radius to become dry for several minutes (simulated using tick sprint). Placing multiple sprinklers (3x3 square centered on the 5x5 farmland) in the area seems to very very slightly help.

To demonstrate:

  1. Run /gamerule randomTickSpeed 0
  2. Place two 5x5 plots of farmland
  3. Over one, place a sprinkler over the center of the farmland supplied by an infinite water source, then cover the rest of the farmland
  4. Run /weather rain
  5. Put both plots into view
  6. Run /gamerule randomTickSpeed 300 (this is 100x the normal random tick speed)
  7. Notice that the plot with the sprinkler has farmland tiles that randomly lose hydration for 1-2 seconds
  8. Multiply that by the 100x speed being applied, that means they lose hydration for 100-200 seconds
  9. Observe that this never happens with the plot directly exposed to rain
